Mariya Gabriel was nominated in 2017 as Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society. In this capacity, she works to facilitate and complete the digital single market. She is a member of the Bulgarian GERB party and of the EPP group. With two terms in the European Parliament (2009 and 2014), she is known for her work on foreign affairs, gender equality, visa policies and enlargement. From 2014 to 2017, she was Vice-President of the EPP group and Head of the Bulgarian Delegation in the EPP group in the European Parliament. She has been particularly active on the EU’s migration policies and visa liberalisation agreements with third countries. As a Vice-President of the EPP Group, she was responsible for maintaining the EPP Group’s relations with countries from the Mediterranean, Middle East and North Africa regions.
